Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross made a little bit of history on Wednesday (Feb. 3) when the nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globes were announced.

The Nine Inch Nails members are nominated for best score motion picture for both Mank and Soul. They are the first composing team in Golden Globes history with two scores in that category in the same year. Moreover, no individual composer has achieved this feat since Giorgio Moroder, who was nominated 37 years ago for both Flashdance and Scarface.

Reznor and Ross shared the nod for Soul with jazz composer Jon Batiste. All three composers also share an entry on the Academy Awards’ entry list of 136 eligible scores.

Andra Day and Leslie Odom Jr. are double nominees for acting and songwriting for films in which they portray music legends Billie Holiday and Sam Cooke, respectively. Day is nominated for best actress, motion picture, drama for The United States Vs. Billie Holiday and for co-writing that film’s “Tigress and Tweed.” Odom is nominated for best supporting actor, motion picture for One Night in Miami and for co-writing that film’s “Speak Now.”

Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) were double nominees for acting and songwriting in each of the last three years at the Globes (and at the Oscars).

“Io Si (Seen)” from The Life Ahead is nominated for best song motion picture. The song, co-written by Diane Warren, Laura Pausini, Niccolò Agliardi, is heard in Italian in the film. It’s the first Golden Globe nominee that was performed in another language in the film since “Despedida” from Love in the Time of Cholera 13 years ago. That song, co-written by Shakira and Antonio Pinto, was performed in Spanish.

Warren won in this category 10 years ago for “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from Burlesque. Should she win again, she’ll become just the third female songwriter — following Marilyn Bergman and Carole Bayer Sager — to win two Globes for best original song.

Another past Globe winner for best original song, John Legend, wasn’t as fortunate this time around. “Never Break,” which Legend co-wrote for the film Giving Voice, was passed over for a nod. Legend shared in a Globe and Oscar six years ago for “Glory” from Selma.

Other music stars who were left out of the music nominations include Justin Timberlake, Janelle Monáe, Travis Scott, Brandi Carlile and Blige. Maybe they’ll have better luck in the Oscar voting. The shortlists of 15 semi-finalists for best original song and best original score will be announced on Feb. 9.

Hamilton is nominated for two awards, including motion picture, musical or comedy. The Oscars announced last year that the film would not be eligible for their awards. Hamilton: An American Musical won a near-record 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, in 2016.

Here are the nominees — and also some key also-rans — in the two music categories:
