President Donald Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday (Jan. 13). The historic event marks the first time a president has been impeached twice.

Trump was charged with “incitement of insurrection” a week after a massive crowd of rioters violently stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, sending the building into lockdown and leaving five people dead. Before the mob, Trump addressed his supporters in a speech, proclaiming among baseless claims of election fraud: “We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

The House voted 232-197 to impeach the president, including 10 Republicans who chose to vote against Trump. He was first impeached by the House in 2019 over his relationship with Ukraine, but the Senate voted in 2020 to acquit.

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell told the Associated Press that the soonest he would launch an impeachment trial is on Tuesday (Jan. 19), a day before Trump is set to leave the White House. If convicted, Trump will be prevented from running for office in the future.

As the trial took place and news broke of Trump’s impeachment, a number of stars flooded social media with thoughts. See them below.
