Toni Cornell has remembered her late dad Chris with a touching tribute and resurfaced a cover of his Temple of the Dog song “Hunger Strike,” a recording she made for a good cause.

Last April, at the age of just 15, Toni performed the song for “Music Lives,” which benefited the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund in support of those in the music industry that lost their livelihoods to the health crisis.

“‘Hunger Strike’ was released 30 years ago today,” she writes in an Instagram post, shared Thursday (Jan. 14). “It’s not only one of the most iconic songs of all time but one of my personal favorites. I recorded it for Music Lives to raise money for covid relief in April 2020 and in tribute to my dad who would have been the first to do everything he could to help.”

In the original video, Cornell is seen in her late dad’s studio surrounded by guitars and an effects tower.

Chris Cornell, the late SoundgardenAudioslave and Temple of the Dog frontman, took his own life in May 2017, aged 52. He left a considerable legacy. Cornell was one of the linchpins of Seattle’s grunge movement, and is considered to have possessed one of the exceptional voices in rock.

Judging by Toni’s performance video, powerful pipes run in the family.

“Love you daddy,” writes Toni, “and I’m so proud of what you created, who you are and everything you believed in. This song represents all of that to me.”

Last September, more than three years after his death, Cornell posthumously reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart with his cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience.” Soundgarden was nominated for the Rock Hall in 2019.
