HBO and NTS Radio are partnering together for five hours of programming ahead of Tina Turner’s self-titled documentary this weekend, Billboard can exclusively announce on Wednesday (March 24).
The multimedia virtual experience, dubbed “Tina Turner: Rulebreaker,” will celebrate the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s influential musical career and pay homage to her energetic on-stage presence and trailblazing power as a Black woman in the rock genre on Friday (March 26), one day before the HBO documentary’s worldwide debut.
The six-part broadcast kicks off with Dawn Richard selecting her favorite live performances by Turner during “Artist to Stage with Dawn Richard” and Arlo Parks selecting special tracks by Turner and discussing the personal meanings behind them in “Resilience with Arlo Parks.”
Kelsey Lu will also showcase specially selected tracks by various female musicians and describe their versatility and ability to break out of the confines of a single genre in “Defying Boundaries with Kelsey Lu.”
Furthermore, Alima Lee will explore the best songs that sampled Turner and those that have been sampled in Turner’s songs, as well as her best covers, in the NTS live broadcast titled “Tina Turner: Uncovered with Alima Lee,” which will later be archived on the NTS website.
In the theme of Turner’s poignant mission (as heard in the first official trailer for Tina) to become “the first Black rock ‘n’ roll singer to pack places like the [Rolling] Stones,” Nao will pay homage to her and fellow female and Black pioneers in “Trailblazers: Pioneers of Music with Nao.”
NTS’ in-house content series In:Focus will also conduct a deep dive into Turner’s demos, B-sides and rarities for “Tina Turner: In Focus.”
Additionally, BIPOC artists Reyna Noriega, Thaddeus, and Andrea Pippens have designed custom artwork that will appear across social media for “Tina Turner: Rulebreaker.”
Tina offers a revealing look at the life and career of the musical icon, from her early success in the ’60s to her resurgence as a global phenomenon with one of the greatest comebacks in music history in the ’80s. Intimate interviews with Turner herself in her Zurich, Switzerland, hometown, as well as Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright Katori Hall and Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach, will be featured in the doc alongside never-before-seen footage, audio tapes and personal photos.
Tina will premiere on March 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET on HBO, and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
