We’re almost one full calendar year into quarantine, and Zoom filters have consistently added more pizzazz to work meetings, happy hours and family reunions. But one adorable filter used during a case hearing added the purrfect amount of joy to the internet.
Rod Ponton, a county attorney in Presidio County, Texas, found himself with big blue eyes, whiskers, and white-and-gray fur during a hearing on Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Texas’ 394th Judicial District Court when he was unable to turn off a kitten video filter. Judge Roy Ferguson, who was presiding over the case, tried to virtually assist Ponton in the hairy situation, but to no avail.
Ponton assured the judge he wasn’t kitten around when he said, “I’m here live. … I’m not a cat.” But Mariah Carey had quite the laugh.
She reshared the viral video on her Twitter Tuesday and described it as “the f—ing best thing I’ve seen in YEARS!” after quoting the attorney’s famous words.
Judge Ferguson even shared the YouTube link to his Twitter account with an important Zoom tip: “If a child used your computer, before you join a virtual hearing check the Zoom Video Options to be sure filters are off. This kitten just made a formal announcement on a case in the 394th (sound on).”
In an interview with The New York Times, Ponton said he was using his secretary’s computer and she was “mortified” by the mishap.
