Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are the musical equivalent of soulmates. Cave, the legendary singer and songwriter, and Ellis, the dynamic Bad Seed and Dirty Three violinist, have worked together for decades, in the studio and on the road. They’ve composed film scores, practically lived in each other’s pockets. They even counted on one another as bandmates, in Grinderman.

They’ve never cut an entire album of works as a duo, until now.

Cave and Ellis dropped the aptly-named Carnage at the stroke of midnight. It’s an album, explains Cave, an inductee in the ARIA Hall of Fame, that’s “a brutal but very beautiful record nested in a communal catastrophe.”

Making Carnage “was an accelerated process of intense creativity,” adds Ellis. Its eight songs “were there in one form or another within the first two and a half days.”

Cave apparently never stops. He shot the live film Idiot Prayer at Alexandra Palace during London’s 2020 lockdown. The film enjoyed a global theatrical release via Trafalgar Releasing, and the LP of that session went Top 10 in Australia, and Top 10 in the U.K.

The last Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds studio album was 2019’s Ghosteen, which peaked at No. 4 in the U.K. and was a finalist for the Australian Music Prize.
