Snoop Dogg knows where he’ll find his good friend DMX. Just look up.

The two hip-hop giants met almost three decades ago, and remained close friends until DMX’s death last Friday (April 9), at the age of 50.

On Monday night, when Snoop zoomed into The Tonight Show for a chat with its host Jimmy Fallon, DMX was at the front of his mind.

When asked for his thoughts on Snoop’s Verzus battle with DMX last July, the rapper said their rumble “meant the world to me.” It gave onlookers “a chance to see two dogs that naturally loved each other, celebrate each other under the name of hip-hop,” he recounted. “We had god in the building with us that night. That makes me feel good about DMX’s transition to know that he’s off to a better place and he’s finally got his angel wings.”

Those two dogs met at a concert, perhaps in 1994, Snoop recalled. They connected and went back to the studio afterwards. Their very first words would be immortalized in song, 1997’s “Get at Me Dog,” a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and one of DMX’s signature numbers. “That night inspired him to create that song,” he explained.

Snoop also talked about his own fight club, his gin brand and his forthcoming gig as a “Mega Mentor” on NBC’s The Voice.

Losing DMX isn’t the end of days, Snoop noted. “Legends never die, their soul will continue to bless the world and he was a great spirit who always looked out for everybody. He always prayed for everybody.”

DMX (real name Earl Simmons) died after suffering a heart attack triggered by a drug overdose. The hip-hop star had been on life support and was in a “vegetative state,” according to his former manager Nakia Walker, since the previous Sunday.
